Total used will work ok until you're using over 4Gb, IIRC.

Maybe somebody else has devised some more cunning solutions, but this is
another reason why I decided to stick with parititions no bigger than
4Gb :)

Indeed, especially when adding 64-bit support for drive stuff would be
relatively simple :(
